Hillary crying "SEXISM".....again

Hopefully she will continue her "victim, I am a woman card" because the last time she played it she began to immediately sink in the polls.

The story starts with this......

A comment made by Barack Obama about drinking tea has the Clinton campaign in a tizzy, making a tempest in a teapot. We just can't avoid the cliches, sorry.

At a stop on Friday in Coralville, Mr. Obama took a subtle dig at Hillary Rodham Clinton, hinting that his diverse background and extensive global travel deepens his level of experience more than being eight years of being the first lady. Here we go again.

"It's that experience, that understanding, not just of what world leaders I went and talked to in the ambassador's house I had tea with, but understanding the lives of the people like my grandmother who lives in a tiny hut in Africa, with no running water." he said.

The Clinton campaign shot back quickly, claiming that Mr. Obama had in fact made a sexist comment towards the first viable female candidate for president.

Mr. Obama scoffed at the response, of course, and said he was not referring to Mrs. Clinton's gender when he made the comment. "Those folks must really be on edge," he said, smiling.

The Hillary campaign is claiming that Obama's reference to "TEA" is a sexist remark.

By the way, Hillary should know that the BRITISH drink TEA instead of COFFEE.........including THE MEN. For her to say that drinking TEA is a SEXIST remark just exposes her LACK OF UNDERSTANDING of foreign cultures.

Wasn't Obama referring to HIMSELF having tea with ambassadors?

I can't find the link but he said that he was talking about congressional overseas visits--and not Bill Clinton's wife.

A tad bit sensitive--reactive--over reactive maybe?? The aide who charged sexism is probably in hot water by now.

Re: Hillary crying "SEXISM".....again (none / 0)

He was referring to Clinton. It was a sexist pig remark. Shouldn't be surprising given his legislative track record of not supporting women's issues.

In the same clip this afternoon, he again refered to his living overseas giving him foreign policy insight. Obama lived overseas from age 6 to 10.

it was a sexist remark (1.66 / 3)

and not just because it was a reference to tea.  Men drink tea too.  If you don't get it too bad.
But women will and calling him on his not the least bit subtle sexist remark is not playing any sort of victim card.
If he continues many women who are supporting him will not vote for him.  He'll have only the college kids turning out for him.
He is an asshole.

His remarks were way over the line and I won't vote for anyone who has so little respect for women that he thinks what he said was okay.

Wow.  Hillary doesn't like to drink tea, huh?

Well, after managing to reclaim her footing in Iowa, it looks like Hillary is spiraling back down into crazyville.

Next her people will be trying to call Obama a crack dealing Muslim who has been trying to run for President since he was four.  Oh wait...

by Namtrix on Fri Dec 28, 2007 at 09:27:17 PM EST

this is funny (none / 0)

I really hope that the Clinton Camp continues to push this. Only people already squarely in the Clinton camp would bother to seize on this.

Moreover, I find it comical that a campaign which has engaged in racial fear tactics would dare to feign outrage over this. I'm not surprised of course, as the Clinton campaign has demonstrated itself to be rather weak and sensitive--all while being a bully.

Obama's response to this (only most recent) claim of sexism was classic. That's right Barack, don't allow these people to put you on the defensive.

Just continue to mock them...with a smile.  Don't even pretend like you respect them.

I really find it humorous that you're like, well Clinton's campaign OBVIOUSLY used racial fear tactics, but Obama's campaign OBVIOUSLY wasn't making a sexist comment.  I mean, you should try to have a little self-awareness here, because you're not exactly assessing this objectively.

Yes, and I'm sure it's not simply one person's assessment that Obama's comment was sexist.  I'm simply pointing out that it gets amusing watching people consistently proclaim that their candidate is innocent of every accusation and the other candidate is guilty of every accusation.  What a coincidence, eh?

No. That shows that he gives ZERO weight to these charges of sexism. If he thinks the charge is foolish, why should he pretend that he takes it seriously?

Team Clinton just wants to put him on the defensive. He's not falling for it. Hell, he's probably amused by it.

I'll just say this.  The particular tactic of Hillary's campaign here - declining to levy charges of sexism themselves, but coyly sending out links to blogs that charge sexism under the guise of "look what the blogs are saying" - is a bit lame in my book.

Steve generally I think you are one of the good guys here even if I don't agree with you all the time.  However more than once you have made remarks that showed a lack of understanding when it came to sexism and women's issues.
Whatever way Clinton wants to handle this is appropriate.  What do you expect when the useless media can't pay attention to the reality of the change and instead accuses Clinton of playing the victim.  Tweety, Scarborough etc.... write the storyline and there it goes, everyone accepts it as the truth.
The fact is that Obama's behavior today was despicable and he should be called on it in the media but he won't be.

Re: Hillary crying "SEXISM".....again (none / 0)

What I'm saying is, if the idea is "we can't get away with charging sexism ourselves, so we'll just issue a press release with links to blogs that have charged sexism," I don't think that actually gets them anywhere with people.

I'm sorry that I can't be as sensitive to gender issues as someone like hwc, who reminds us every day that Iowans are sexist unless they nominate Hillary, but rest assured that I'm trying.

Again this is part of Obama's strategy (2.00 / 1)

He was concerned about the effect of Bhutto's assassination on the campaign, so he is attempting to minimize the experience that HRC gained while she was First Lady. Also, the statements were a call to arm to the sexists, particulary young men, who don't care for Hillary. I'm sure that they will galvanize Obama's young supporters like you see here, who look down upon Hillary and mock her every chance they get.

Why is anyone surprised by these Obama statements? He's made similiar statements about her throughout this campaign....

Re: Hillary crying "SEXISM".....again (none / 0)

Face it. To some, any disparaging of Hillary's experience will be perceived as sexist.  I mean, she's a woman, so if you're attacking her you're sexist. Don't you idiots understand this?

I bet our friends in Asia might be surprised to learn that  tea-drinking is effeminate behavior.

Of course, most Americans are indeed ignorant of this fact, something the Clinton camp knows. Once again, camp Clinton trying to prey on the ignorance of the American people. Then again, this tact will probably be effective with her core demographics.

Well, since the campaign is happening in America, the relevant question is whether it taps into an American stereotype, now isn't it.  I'm sure I can come up with a race-based analogy if this point is too hard to grasp.

It was a "the little woman looked pretty and drank tea, but the menfolk did business" remark.   It was an attempt to denigrate her experience as a very active First Lady, and it is backfiring with women all over.

Even if it were NOT sexist, and that were all Hillary did, it is still a stupid comparison.  Obama really wants to go with the following equation, huh?

Tea with ambassadors and world leaders = crap

Tea with Granny in Kenya = mad diplomacy skillz

In what universe?

"And even her "experience" mantra does not bear close scrutiny, despite her boast of having travelled to 79 countries and being part of "a presidential team" for eight years.

When the decisions to bomb Afghanistan and Sudan were taken in 1998, she was barely on speaking terms with Bill Clinton after he had confessed to lying about his sexual relations with the intern Monica Lewinsky.

She cites her role in bringing about peace in Northern Ireland. But those who were there remember her as doing little more than having tea with Protestant and Catholic women.

One of her primary concerns in Ulster was that the front of any tables she sat at would be obscured so her legs could not be photographed."
